Today, we’re excited to spotlight our talented assistant photographer, Cullan Sanders! From fine arts to animation to capturing once-in-a-lifetime wedding moments, Cullan brings a unique perspective (and a little bit of good luck) to everything he photographs.
A Creative Journey Rooted in Fine Arts
Cullan’s path to photography began at the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP program, where he earned his BFA in Fine Arts in 2020 with a focus on animation and photography. During that time, he explored everything from darkroom film development to welding and woodworking. These experiences that expanded not only his skill set but also his worldview.
“Being surrounded by so many passionate artists who were each on their own journey of self-discovery was inspiring,” Cullan shares. “It made me want to keep exploring what I could create.”
After college, he focused on building an animation portfolio while taking on freelance creative work. But over time, photography stood out as the medium where his creativity truly flourished. “Animation is such a specific industry that requires a lot of patience,” he explains. “Photography, on the other hand, was something I could share and sell more easily, and I love how accessible it is as an art form.”
Capturing Life Through a Different Lens
From street photography to studio portraits, Cullan is drawn to documenting people and places in a way that feels authentic. When he travels, he loves photographing the rhythm of daily life in busy cities. He loves noticing how people connect with their surroundings and how even the smallest moments can tell a much bigger story.
In the studio, his approach is just as thoughtful. “I like to create a relaxed environment,” he says. “Instead of stiff, posed smiles, I enjoy capturing real, candid joy; moments where people feel comfortable being themselves.”
Behind the Lens at KHP
Cullan first picked up a Canon camera, which still holds a special place in his heart, but Nikon has become his go-to since joining the K Herman Photography team. As an assistant photographer, he supports our lead shooters, helps with details, and captures beautiful behind-the-scenes moments that make wedding galleries so complete. He jokes that his superpower is luck, but we think it’s his eye for meaningful moments that makes him such a valuable part of our team. “I always seem to be in the right place at the right time,” Cullan says. “Whether it’s catching the perfect candid or dodging the rain after a ceremony, I’m so grateful I get to do what I love.”
