Family photography doesn't have to feel stressful. In fact, some of our favorite images happen when everyone relaxes, lets go of perfection, and simply enjoys being together.

At K Herman Photography, we've spent more than 14 years photographing Cincinnati families through our family photography sessions, and if there's one thing we've learned, it's this: happy parents usually lead to happy kids. Preparing for your session doesn't have to be complicated. A little planning goes a long way toward creating genuine smiles and beautiful memories.

Here are our favorite tips to help your family have a fun, relaxed, and successful summer photo session.

1. Don't Put Pressure on Your Kids

Children can sense when they're expected to "perform."

Instead of reminding them to smile over and over, tell them you're going to spend time playing together. We'll guide the rest. Some of the sweetest photographs happen between the poses, when your family is laughing, cuddling, or simply enjoying the moment.

2. Dress for Comfort

Choose outfits that make everyone feel comfortable and confident. Soft, breathable fabrics work beautifully during Cincinnati summers and help little ones stay cool.

Stick with coordinating colors instead of matching outfits, and avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from your family's connection.

3. Bring a Few Favorites

If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small comfort item, bring it along. We may use it for a few photos, or simply keep it nearby if it's needed for reassurance.

Bringing water and a small, non-messy snack is also a great idea, especially for younger children.

Here are a few of our favorite moments from recent Seasonal Spotlight Sessions with Cincinnati families. Every smile, hug, and genuine laugh reminds us why we love photographing this beautiful season of life.

4. Trust the Process

One of the biggest worries we hear is, "What if my child won't smile?"

Don't worry. We've photographed thousands of children over the past 14 years, and we promise, every personality is different.

Our sessions are designed to be relaxed and playful. We'll guide your family naturally, keep things moving, and capture authentic moments instead of forcing perfect smiles.

5. Leave Plenty of Time

Arriving a few minutes early helps everyone settle in before we begin. Rushing into a session can create unnecessary stress, especially with little ones.

Take a deep breath, enjoy the evening, and let us take care of the rest.

6. Let Kids Be Kids

Some of the most meaningful photographs come from genuine personalities.

Whether they're shy, silly, adventurous, or curious, we want to capture who they are right now. Those are often the moments families treasure most years later.

7. Remember Why You're Here

Years from now, your children won't remember whether every hair was perfectly in place.

They'll remember the hugs.

The laughter.

The way everyone was together.

Those are the moments we love to preserve.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Family Photos

What should kids wear for summer family photos?

Choose lightweight, comfortable clothing in coordinating colors. Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones photograph beautifully during the summer. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns that can distract from your family's connection.

What time of day is best for summer family photos?

Most outdoor summer sessions take place during the hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. This creates the beautiful, glowing images you see throughout our portfolio.

What if my child won't smile?

Don't worry. Some of our favorite photographs happen when children are simply being themselves. We use prompts, games, and natural interaction to capture genuine expressions rather than forcing smiles.

Can we bring snacks or comfort items?

Absolutely. A small, non-messy snack, water, or a favorite stuffed animal can help little ones feel comfortable and happy during the session.

How long are Seasonal Spotlight Sessions?

Seasonal Spotlight Sessions are intentionally designed to be short (about 15 minutes) enough to keep young children engaged while giving us plenty of time to create a beautiful gallery of authentic family moments.

Can we bring our dog?

Yes! Well-behaved dogs are almost always welcome because we know they're an important part of your family. Just be sure read each booking description to confirm!

Do you offer family photography outside of Seasonal Spotlight Sessions?

Absolutely! In addition to our Seasonal Spotlight Sessions, we offer full family photography sessions throughout the Cincinnati area for families looking for more flexibility, additional locations, or extended session time.
